About the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Teaching and Learning

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology and the Department of General Education, Faculty of Teaching and Learning at Mount Royal University invite applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2018, subject to final budgetary approval.

Mount Royal University’s Faculty of Science and Technology offers a four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Students can pursue majors in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, General Science, Geology, and Health Science. The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology offers majors in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Health Science, and contributes courses to students working towards a General Science major. The Biology Department is dedicated to providing teaching and laboratory experiences for undergraduate students, including independent research experiences.

The Department of General Education, Faculty of Teaching and Learning is responsible for the development and delivery of the liberal education complement of all Mount Royal University undergraduate degree programs. The Liberal Education requirement normally consists of ten one-semester courses taken from four thematic clusters. The Department of General Education offers required foundational first year courses and a number of upper level courses. In foundation level (first year) courses students explore predisciplinary themes and subjects and are exposed to a range of academic disciplines while developing key undergraduate intellectual capacities.

About the Role

As this will be a cross-appointment, successful candidates will be expected to provide outstanding undergraduate teaching that can contribute to both departments.

Candidates should have a strong background in anatomy and physiology and the successful candidate will develop and teach courses in Biology that relate to their disciplinary expertise such as: anatomy, embryology, physiology, pharmacology, or histology.

Candidates will also be responsible for teaching courses in General Education, Cluster-One: Numeracy and Scientific Literacy. The General Education courses that the successful candidate will teach aim to develop an understanding of the nature and methods of science and mathematics. Thus, it is necessary for the candidate to be able to relate their expertise to scientific topics reaching a broad undergraduate audience and be able to teach fundamental competencies associated with mathematical and quantitative reasoning. The successful candidate will also play a role in the revision and development of curriculum, professional development, research and scholarship, and service. Any prior work in a general education type setting would be an asset.

New faculties are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service only. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure. We are looking to hire a candidate on our Teaching/Scholarship/Service (TSS) work pattern and thus are looking for candidates whose scholarship can be adapted to an undergraduate institution where teaching is the primary focus. The ability to attract external funding, or clear promise thereof, is desirable. Candidates will be assessed on their potential to maintain an on-going research program, suitable to a Mount Royal University context.

Qualifications include a completed Ph.D., relevant undergraduate teaching experience, and evidence of engagement in service relevant to the candidates’ prior experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong understanding of the role of fundamental science and mathematics education in the context of an undergraduate liberal education.
