The Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH) and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of British Columbia invite applications from outstanding scientists for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) – Tier II. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure track. Candidates must have a PhD degree, MD/PhD, awarded within the past 10 years, or equivalent with postdoctoral research experience, have demonstrated excellence in teaching and demonstrated accomplishments in molecular biology and genetics with expertise in Manipulating Gene Expression in the Brain. Ideally, the research program would focus on developing and/or applying tools for manipulating gene expression in the brain, either towards new therapeutics or for understanding the working of the brain. CRISPR/Cas9, RNAi and/or novel targeting vectors might be key tools.

The DMCBH is an interdisciplinary neuroscience research centre focused on discovering the basis for nervous system function and dysfunction, with the aim of developing new treatments. The Department of BMB consists of twenty faculty members spanning all areas of biochemistry and molecular biology.

As a faculty member in the DMCBH and BMB, the successful applicant will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, collaborate with other faculty members, actively participate in service to the Department, University, and academic/scientific community, and effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their field of expertise. Evidence of teaching excellence and an interest in innovative teaching methods is required.

The successful applicant will have opportunities to collaborate with a large and diverse community of neurobiologists, immunologists, cell biologists and clinicians at UBC and affiliated hospitals. Established research groups and facilities include Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, the Centre for Drug Research and Development, and the Genome Science & Technology training program. The successful applicant will also have access to state-of-the-art microscopy, proteomics, genomics, and flow cytometry as well as the Centre for Disease Modeling, which enables the use of rodent models of disease, and FINDER, a level-3 biosafety containment facility.

Appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Competitive start-up and infrastructure development funds will be provided. All positions are subject to final budgetary approval. The successful candidate is expected to assume the position by no later than September 1, 2018.

The Canada Research Chair is equally open to individuals of all nationalities. The Chair is subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. Applicants must meet eligibility requirement for a CRC Tier 2 position. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination.
