About the Faculty of Science and Technology

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2018, subject to final budgetary approval.

Mount Royal University’s Faculty of Science and Technology offers a four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Students can pursue majors in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, General Science, Geology, and Health Science. The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology offers majors in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Health Science, and contributes courses to students working towards a General Science major. The Biology Department is dedicated to providing teaching and laboratory experiences for undergraduate students, including independent research experiences.

About the Role

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service only. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.

We are looking to hire a candidate on our Teaching/Scholarship/Service (TSS) work pattern and thus are looking for candidates whose scholarship can be adapted to an undergraduate institution where teaching is the primary focus, where researchers make use of shared multi-purpose lab space, and where all research must involve undergraduate students or have tangible benefit to undergraduate teaching. The ability to attract external funding, or clear promise thereof, is desirable. The department is dedicated to providing teaching and laboratory experiences for undergraduate students, including independent research experiences, and the candidate will be expected to contribute to this endeavor.

We are looking for a candidate that can complement our current faculty interests and provide support to our courses in both cellular and molecular biology and anatomy and physiology. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the use of molecular and cellular techniques to investigate physiological and pathophysiological processes. The candidate will be expected to have a strong background and ability to teach and develop courses that might include: vertebrate physiology, developmental biology, cellular and molecular biology, among others.

Qualifications include a completed Ph.D., relevant undergraduate teaching experience, and service engagement relevant to the candidates’ prior experience. Additionally, candidates will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and the potential for maintaining an ongoing program of scholarship, suitable to a Mount Royal University context.
